Benazir Bhutto was born on June 21, 1953, at Karachi's Pinto Hospital, the eldest child of former premier Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. She inherited leadership of the PPP after a military coup overthrew her father's government and won election in 1988, becoming the first female prime minister of a Muslim nation. In 2007, she returned to Pakistan after an extended exile, but, tragically, was killed in a suicide attack.
Her father, Zulfikar, went on to serve as Pakistan's prime minister in the 1970s. Benazir was educated at Harvard University and the University of Oxford, also serving as the first Asian woman to preside over the Oxford Union.
She was the eldest of the four siblings. Her father was the former prime minister of Pakistan. As such, since young, she was exposed to political ideas and policies.
In 1976, she became the first Asian woman to elected as the President Oxford Union.
She was exposed to thoughts and beliefs since a young age.
She married Asif Ali Zardari on December 18, 1987. The couple was blessed with two daughters and a son.
Popularly known as the Iron Lady of Pakistan, Benazir Bhutto opened the doors of politics for women in Pakistan. Not only did she become the first woman to head a major political party, but she went on to become the first and till date, the only female Prime Minister of Pakistan. She served this powerful position twice in her lifetime.

The assassination of Benazir Bhutto took place on 27 December 2007 in Rawalpindi, Pakistan. Shots were fired at her after a political rally at Liaquat National Bagh, and a suicide bomb was detonated immediately following the shooting. She was declared dead at 18:16 local time (13:16 UTC), at Rawalpindi General Hospital.
Benazir’s murder shook the world and even one of her bitterest foes, Nawaz Sharif, couldn’t help hold back tears.
